Understanding Koi Varieties
Part of the joy of koi keeping is appreciating the artistry behind each variety. Here are the classics you'll encounter most often.
The Gosanke (The 'Big Three')
- Kohaku — white body with red (hi) markings. The most iconic koi. See our Kohaku and Doitsu Kohaku currently in stock.
- Taisho Sanke — white with red and black (sumi) accents. (Currently unavailable — rotates seasonally.)
- Showa Sanshoku — black body wrapped with red and white. We stock Showa, Gin Rin Showa and Kin Ki Showa.
Other varieties we love
- Chagoi — the friendliest koi; grows huge and becomes hand-tame. We usually stock several sizes of Gin Rin Chagoi.
- Kujaku — metallic "peacock" with a matsuba pattern under vivid red. Both standard and Doitsu Kujaku often available.
- Asagi & Shusui — indigo-blue traditional varieties with red on cheeks & belly. See our Gin Rin Asagi and Shusui.
- Goshiki — five-colour koi that deepen beautifully with age.
- Shiro Utsuri — dramatic jet-black with pure-white pattern.
- Tancho Kohaku — pure-white koi with a single red circle on the head.
- Benigoi — solid deep-red "flame" of the pond.
What Does 'Grade' Mean?
Grade reflects overall quality — the crispness of colour, the balance and edges of the pattern, body conformation, and skin lustre. Higher-grade koi show sharper, more deliberate patterning and superior body shape. Grade affects price, but the 'best' koi is ultimately the one that speaks to you.
Buying Tips for Beginners
- Start with hardy, forgiving varieties as you learn water management.
- Buy from a seller who quarantines and health-checks their fish.
- Always request a photo or video of your specific koi before it ships.
